On Sunday, September 20, 2020, the International Greek Diaspora Online Event was organized with great success, by the General Secretariat of Public Diplomacy and Hellenes Abroad and the Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest (HCC-SW) via its project World Hellenic Diaspora, for the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle Salamis. The event was attended online by 2,000 expatriates from around the world.
Speakers at the event were the Honorary Ambassador Dimitrios Iliopoulos, former EU Representative to the International Organizations in Geneva (UN), and The Hague and member of the Board of the Hellenic Institute for Strategic Studies (ELISME), and the Assistant Professor of Navy Mr. Zisis Fotakis. Greetings were addressed by the Secretary-General of Public Diplomacy and Hellenes Abroad, Prof. Ioannis Chrysoulakis, the President of HCC-SW, Mr. Yannis Remediakis, the expatriate State Senator of Rhode Island, Mr. Lou Raptakis, the expatriate State Senator, Ms. Nicole Malliotakis, and the Mayor of Salamis Mr. George Panagopoulos. It is worth noting that after the greetings and speeches, 16-year-old Tiffany Mezitis, a representative of the new generation of expatriates in the USA, developed her views on the importance of the historic Battle of Salamis today.
The Secretary-General of Public Diplomacy and Hellenes Abroad, Prof. Ioannis Chrysoulakis, praised the importance of the Battle of Salamis, both for Greece and World Hellenic Diaspora as well as the entire western civilization. He stressed that Thermopylae and Salamis engraved in the collective memory of the West the meaning and value of virtue and freedom. At the same time, they forged the unity of the Greeks with a unifying force that inspired and still inspires the entire world. Referring to modern Greece, he stressed that, as then, Greece still defends "its ideals and holds its head high", showing the western world "where democracy was born and what freedom means".
The event was held in collaboration with the Diaspora organizations: Federation of Hellenic Medical Societies of North America, Hellenic Medical Society of New York, Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce of New York, Federation of Hellenic American Organizations of Illinois "Enosis", Federation of Hellenic American Organizations of New Jersey, Panhellenic Federation of Florida, Federation of the Lesvos Island Societies of America and Canada, Pan Arcadian Federation of America, Pancretan Association of America, Pan Greek American Teacher's Federation, Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, National Hellenic Society, International Hellenic Association, Canadian Hellenic Congress and Federation Of Hellenic American Societies Of Southern California
It is noted that this online event was the second event in a row, with which the General Secretariat of Public Diplomacy and Hellenes Abroad participated in the celebrations for the anniversary year "Thermopylae - Salamina 2020". The first event concerned the Battle of Thermopylae and took place on August 29, 2020, with co-organizers the Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwestern States and the Hellenic Cultural Foundation.

Επετειακή τηλεδιάσκεψη για τη Ναυμαχία της Σαλαμίνας
Με μεγάλη επιτυχία πραγματοποιήθηκε την Κυριακή, 20 Σεπτεμβρίου 2020, η Διεθνής Ομογενειακή Διαδικτυακή Εκδήλωση που οργανώθηκε από τη Γενική Γραμματεία Δημόσιας Διπλωματίας και Απόδημου Ελληνισμού και το Ελληνικό Κέντρο Πολιτισμού των Νοτιοδυτικών Πολιτειών (HCC-SW) μέσω του έργου "Παγκόσμια Ελληνική Δασπορά" για την επέτειο των 2.500 ετών από τη Ναυμαχία της Σαλαμίνας. Την εκδήλωση παρακολούθησαν διαδικτυακά 2.000 ομογενείς από όλο τον κόσμο.
Ομιλητές στην εκδήλωση ήταν ο Πρέσβης επί τιμή Δημήτριος Ηλιόπουλος, πρώην εκπρόσωπος της ΕΕ στους διεθνείς οργανισμούς στη Γενεύη (ΟΗΕ) και τη Χάγη και μέλος του ΔΣ του Ελληνικού Ινστιτούτου Στρατηγικών Μελετών (ΕΛΙΣΜΕ), και ο Επίκουρος Καθηγητής Ναυτικής Ιστορίας της Σχολής Ναυτικών Δοκίμων, κ. Ζήσης Φωτάκης. Χαιρετισμούς απηύθυναν ο Γενικός Γραμματέας Δημόσιας Διπλωματίας και Απόδημου Ελληνισμού, Ομοτ. Καθ. Ιωάννης Χρυσουλάκης, ο Πρόεδρος του HCC-SW, κ. Γιάννης Ρεμεδιάκης, ο ομογενής Πολιτειακός Γερουσιαστής του Ροντ Άιλαντ, κ. Λου Ραπτάκης/Lou Raptakis, η ομογενής Πολιτειακή Γερουσιαστής, κα Nicole Malliotakis, και ο Δήμαρχος Σαλαμίνας, κ. Γιώργος Παναγόπουλος. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι μετά τους χαιρετισμούς και τις ομιλίες, ανέπτυξε τις απόψεις της για τη σημασία της ιστορικής Ναυμαχίας της Σαλαμίνας στις μέρες μας και η 16χρονη Tiffany Mezitis, εκπρόσωπος της νέας γενιάς ομογενών στις ΗΠΑ.
Ο Γενικός Γραμματέας Δημόσιας Διπλωματίας και Απόδημου Ελληνισμού, Ομότ. Καθ. Ιωάννης Χρυσουλάκης, εξήρε τη σημασία της Ναυμαχίας της Σαλαμίνας, τόσο για την Ελλάδα και τον απανταχού Ελληνισμό όσο και για ολόκληρο το δυτικό πολιτισμό. Τόνισε ότι Θερμοπύλες και Σαλαμίνα χάραξαν στη συλλογική μνήμη της Δύσης την έννοια και την αξία της αρετής και της ελευθερίας. Παράλληλα, σφυρηλάτησαν την ενότητα των Ελλήνων με μια ενωτική δύναμη που ενέπνευσε και εμπνέει όλο τον κόσμο. Αναφερόμενος στη σύγχρονη Ελλάδα, τόνισε ότι, όπως τότε, υπερασπίζεται και σήμερα «τα ιδεώδη της και κρατά ψηλά το κεφάλι», δείχνοντας στο δυτικό κόσμο «πού γεννήθηκε η δημοκρατία και τι σημαίνει ελευθερία».
Η εκδήλωση πραγματοποιήθηκε με τη συνεργασία των ομογενειακών φορέων Federation of Hellenic Medical Societies of North America, Hellenic Medical Society of New York, Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce of New York, Federation of Hellenic American Organizations of Illinois "Enosis", Federation of Hellenic American Organizations of New Jersey, Panhellenic Federation of Florida, Federation of the Lesvos Island Societies of America and Canada, Pan Arcadian Federation of America, Pancretan Association of America, Pan Greek American Teacher's Federation, Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, National Hellenic Society, International Hellenic Association και Canadian Hellenic Congress.
Σημειώνεται ότι η διαδικτυακή αυτή διοργάνωση αποτέλεσε τη δεύτερη κατά σειρά εκδήλωση, με την οποία η Γενική Γραμματεία Δημόσιας Διπλωματίας και Απόδημου Ελληνισμού συμμετείχε στους εορτασμούς για το επετειακό έτος «Θερμοπύλες – Σαλαμίνα 2020». Η πρώτη εκδήλωση αφορούσε τη Μάχη των Θερμοπυλών και πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 29 Αυγούστου 2020 με συνδιοργανωτές το Ελληνικό Κέντρο Πολιτισμού των Νοτιοδυτικών Πολιτειών και το Ελληνικό Ίδρυμα Πολιτισμού.
