"A Music Journey to Greece with a voice and a piano"

The concert by Yannis Spanos and Hrysoula Stefanaki will be an unforgettable musical journey through the landscape of songs made popular by Spanos.  The audience will be encouraged to sing along.

Spanos-Stefanaki-Houston-smallYiannis Spanos was born in Kiato, a small coastal town in Corinth, Greece, where he began studying piano at an early age.  After dropping out of law school, he moved to Paris where he worked with the rising stars of the French music and theater scene, including Brigitte Bardot and Pia Colombo. 

In the early 1960s, he returned to Greece to create his own distinct music, employing the talents of the country’s emerging young singers.  He was a founder of the New Wave period of Greek music with albums such as Anthologies, That Summer and Aristotelous Street.

Join us on Friday, November 9, at 7:30 as we present Euripides’ Helen, translated into modern English poetry by Louis Markos, professor in English and Scholar in Residence at Houston Baptist University. Produced and directed by Cyprus native Leonidas Loizides and performed by his troupe of Greek actors, the play will be held at HBU’s Dunham Theater, 7502 Fondren Road.


The vision of Loizides’ troupe is to present Greek tragedy in a form that is faithful to the original but still accessible to a modern global audience. The troupe believes that to wrestle with the issues raised in Greek tragedy is to wrestle with what it means to be a citizen in a democracy.

The Helen of Euripides offers a new twist on a very old story. What if Helen never actually went to Troy? What if Hera, wishing to punish Paris, caused him to take a phantom Helen to Troy while the real Helen was sent for safekeeping to Egypt? And what if, seventeen years later, Helen and her husband Menelaus were to be reunited on the barbaric shores of North Africa?
Would the meeting end in death or a reaffirmation of the power of love? Join us and find out!

The production of “Helen” is produced and directed by Leonidas Loizides and performed by his troupe of Greek actors. The performance will be held at HBU’s Dunham Theater, 7502 Fondren, Friday, November 9th at 7:30 pm.

Iphigenia at Taurus – a Classic Greek Tragedy by Euripides

Leonidas Loizides returns for the fourth consecutive year with his troupe of actors to perform Iphigenia at Taurus on the Dunham Theater stage at HBU.  This play was adapted by Dr. Louis Markos, Professor in English and the Honors College Scholar-in-Residence at HBU.  Dr. Markos has worked hard to make the English translation faithful to the original script while still being as direct as possible.
