Speakers on Migrant Crisis in Greece @ AHEPA Meeting this Wednesday

Dear Brothers:

This Wednesday night, March 9, 2016, AHEPA #29 has invited three volunteers who have recently returned from Greece to address our members and guests.

Following a light supper in the S. P. Martel Hall, these brave individuals will share their personal experiences with the refugee community in Lesvos and the Greek citizens who are helping with this international crisis.

On this same night, our AHEPA Charitable Foundation will present over $12,000 in donations to local, national and international charities-proceeds from the four HUD-sponsored apartment projects that AHEPA 29 operates for low income seniors.

Over the Christmas 2015 holidays, Houston-based Iranian-Americans Negin Sobhani, Yunus Ahmadi, and Yalda Ahmadi headed to Lesvos, Greece. Armed with thousands of dollars of donations from family and friends from across the world, the three spent about a week at the Moria Refugee Camp in the medical tent run by Health Point Project and the family compound run by Danish Refugee Council. Spurred by the largest refugee crisis since World War II, the pleading of international volunteers for translators, and the urge to act, the three will share stories and discuss their experiences with locals, humanitarian agencies, volunteers, and refugees in Moria Camp, Lesvos.

We have extended an invitation to the entire AGOC community (through the Church bulletin) to be a part of this evening.

So that we may provide enough food for everyone, PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WILL BE ATTENDING THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT (if you have not already done so). You may simply respond to this email.

Farewell to the Greek Consull George Papanikolaou

Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest, is having a farewell gathering to honor the Greek Consul, Georgios Papanikolaou, December 18th @ 7:00 pm at Theo’s Restaurant (812 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77006)

Mr. Papanikolaou’s next assignment is in Azerbaijan and he and his family are departing Houston January 9, 2016. HCC-SW and all the member organizations will take this opportunity to thank the Consul for his tireless efforts in promoting our Hellenic culture and wish him well in his new assignment.

Light hors d’oeuvres will be provided along with a cash bar. So, join us as we honor the man who made an incredible impact on Houston’s international community and became a leading member of our Greek family.

"The Birds" Theatrical Presentation and talk

“The Birds”- A play by Aristophanes in a special performance by the Classical Theater Company.

Pre-performance talk by Prof. Harvey Yunis, Professor of Humanities and Classics, Rice University.

Politics and religion…the two topics one never discusses in polite society. Now, you can! Just in time for a presidential election season, “The Birds”, one of the most revered comedies written by the great Greek playwright Aristophanes, is thick with commentary on politics and the relative absurdity of human nature. Aristophanes tears apart the religious and political world of fifth-century B.C.E. Athens. Needless to say, his views and the debates around which they center are still relevant today. A talk about the archaeology and history of the Greek theater precedes the performance. Afterward, enjoy a reception of Greek desserts with dancing and music where politics and religion will be topics of discussion!
