The 31st Annual Houston-Athens Marathon Exchange

On Thursday, January 11th

Come  eat a meal fit for the gods.

It’ll put wings on your feet to run a marathon

 Since the beginning of the Houston-Athens Marathon Exchange, volunteers have sponsored an annual pastichio (or Greek pasta dinner) dinner on the Thursday night prior to the Chevron Houston Marathon.  Funds from this dinner, which includes pastichio, Greek salad, baklava and a complimentary beverage, are used to defray the costs of sending runners from Houston to Athens. 

The runners from Greece participating in the Chevron Houston Marathon, and any Houston winners of the trip to Greece in attendance, are introduced to an audience of local runners and members of the Greek-American community and other guests.  This event has been attended in recent years by many of the international runners participating in the Houston Marathon, including several of the male and female runners who have won the marathon a few days later.  Pastichio Power!!!

The Houston-Athens Marathon Exchange (HAME), a non-profit group of volunteers, is the only program of its type in the United States.

Founded in 1988 by George Sarantopoulos, an avid runner who participated in the Athens and Houston marathons and several fellow Greek-Americans, the HAME was envisioned as an exchange  program linking the ancient Greek running tradition with the modern international marathons to foster good will  between two great nations. 

The idea was so successful it was created with the full and support of Melina Mercblessingouri, Minister of  Culture in Greece.  The marathon organization has continued this unique exchange and is now in its 30th year.

An evening with lyrical mood

A night with Greek Soprano Eleni Calenos performing traditional Greek melodies and arias influenced by Greek culture.

Born in Thessaloniki, Greek soprano Eleni Calenos is capturing critics' and audiences' admiration for the clarity, warmth and beauty of her voice, and her dignified characterizations. Of her performance as Tosca, Opera News said: "Eleni Calenos gave a performance for the ages, both vocally and dramatically", and The Wall Street Journal: "The real standout, was soprano Eleni Calenos' searing performance as Tosca--passionate, mercurial, heart-on-the-sleeve, with all the necessary vocal range, stamina and fire." Of her Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly, the Houston Press said: "The phenomenon was the Cio-Cio San of Greek soprano Eleni Calenos, whose nuanced characterization was a true wonder to hear. She sailed through her dramatic arias as if buoyed by the stirring music."

Teruhiko Toda

 

Teruhiko TodaMr. Toda currently serves as the Music Director of Houston Grand Opera’s Opera to Go and has performed for the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, Nikikai Opera Foundation, Tokyo College of Music and the RAI Torino Symphony Orchestra.

Teruhiko Toda started his career as a solo pianist where he performed a recital at the Citta della Pieve Music Festival in Italy in 1996. Mr. Toda earned his Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from the Tokyo College of Music, followed by a graduate degree in Piano Accompaniment.

ABOUT THE STORY – George Elias Stephanopoulos, Creator/Producer


The Idea: Swing Away, set in present day Greece, is a comedy with heart. And never has an American golf film ventured out of America before this one. Golf is increasingly becoming a worldwide sport with its ascent at last to the Olympics in 2016. Of course, Greeks will likely claim this represents the return of golf to Greece as an ancient Greek game. Whether Greek myth or legend, the charm and wonder of golf is ultimately revealed in Swing Away. 

The Story: The main story of Swing Away is about a American golfer who journeys home to overcome an obstacle and in the process rediscovers again how to “swing away” at life and embrace that which matters most – family, children, health, friends and passions. Despite a very public humiliation, Zoe’s return to Greece allows her to rediscover her roots, her humanity and ultimately her love of the sport.
Theme: “Swing Away” is a golf term that means to hit the ball with ease and freedom. It also serves as a useful metaphor meaning it’s only in following the yearnings of our true self (like Stella does) or in rediscovering them again (like Zoe) that allows the universe or golf gods in this case to conspire to bring joy and unity into our lives. And it’s only through comedy that this theme can be adequately expressed in order to remind each of us to “swing away” in our own lives.

 

A Greek-Inspired Film: Swing Away was one of the few non Greek-language films to be shot, edited, and post-produced within Greece in an effort to support the Greek creative community, as well as to showcase the enormous talent of those working in the industry there, both in front and behind the camera.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION – Michael Achilles Nickles, Director


On Directing: I have always wanted to direct a film in Greece, as I have roots there (all four of my grandparents are Greek) and I am proud of my heritage. I first visited the country as a teenager when I was a camper at the Ionian Village. That is where I first met and became friends with producer George Stephanopoulos. It was during that trip that I had the strange sensation that I had come “home.” All of my trips to Greece since then have had a tremendous impact on me and I wanted to one day honor that in a film. Swing Away gave me that opportunity and it was an experience I’ll never forget.

The Athens Classic Marathon

Founded in 1982, the Athens Authentic Marathon attracts Greek runners as well as many international runners.  The finish line is located at the Panathenaic Stadium, where a crowd of 70,000 spectators once cheered Spiros Louis to victory, and the 2004 Olympic Games marathoners.  Its course approximates the run by Pheidippedes in 490 BC and Spiros Louis in 1896.
