HPST and HCC-SW are proud to co-host a celebration of the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy

C. P. Cavafy (Alexandria, 1863-1933) is the most renowned and far-reaching poet of Modern Greece.

Inspired by Greece’s long and cosmopolitan history, especially in connection with his native city of Alexandria, Egypt, Cavafy’s evocation of desire and decline resonates strongly with the sensibilities of today. Poems like “Ithaca”, “Waiting for the Barbarians”, and many others have firmly entered the global vernacular in our century.

On the occasion of 150 years from Cavafy’s birth, the Hellenic Professional Society of Texas and the Hellenic Cultural Center of the Southwest present a free event, open to the Houston community, to celebrate the poet’s enduring legacy. The event will be hosted at Rice University’s Duncan Hall (McMurtry Auditorium) on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at 6:00 p.m.

Cavafy’s life and works will be explored by Alex Kalamarides, joined by Dimitri Varvarezos and Katerina Kontogeorgaki. Musicians Thomas Helton and Hsin-Jung Tsai will accompany the presentation with musical arrangements. A reception will follow to conclude the celebration.
